The cult of incense-burning was introduced into Japan together with Buddhism in Nara period.
The incense which was a part of the religious ceremony became one of the hobbies as aromatherapy when the then people could get a very sweet scented wood.

They used to shift a fragrance to clothes as burning fragrant wood.
The scented wood. which was rare and expensive was the status symbol for the celebrities of the graceful Imperial Court.
They didn't only distinguish the incenses- but also linked to relation of the seasons and composed a tanka, which is a traditional Japanese poem of thirty-one syllables.
