The third beer

There are "beer", “happoushu (sparkling liquor/ low-malt beer)”, and "the third beer" at the beer corner in the grocery store.

They are names of the types of alcohol defined by the Japanese Liquor Tax Act.

“Happoushu (sparkling liquor/ low-malt beer)” is the liquor which contains ingredients other than those stipulated for beer and is used less than 67% of malt ratio. It is distinguished from beer by the Japanese Liquor Tax Act and is classified as low-malt beer.

However, the government revised the alcohol tax in the fall of 1996 and the tax for low-malt beer containing 50% or higher malt was raised to the level of the beer, because beer sales fell off.

"The third beer" is a sparkling liqueur which tastes similar to beer and does not contain both barley and malt.
And it is neither a beer nor a low-malt beer.
It appeared around 2003 from the motive to want quite tastier and cheaper beer.

Beer is 77 yen in 350ml cans, low-malt beer is 46,99 yen, the third beer is 28 yen, each is imposed in the classification by the liquor tax.
They will directly reflect in the retail price.

But there is a motion to review the tax amount.
